Tai Chi / Qi Gong

Taijiaquan (aka tai chi chuan, tai chi) is essentially a martial art developed in the 17th century. It acquired its current name in the late 19th/early 20th century. Prior to that, it was known as the Chen Family martial art. According to martial arts scholars, many of the styles today were developed from the Chen Family although there are claims of other lineages that stretch back to the 15th century and further.

In this course, you will be learning the Yang 24 (aka Beijing 24) which was created in 1972 by a group of Yang style taijiquan experts for beginner learners. The postures and movements are simplified from the traditional Yang form which has a higher degree of difficulty. The form is a good introduction to taijiquan and will be taught as a way of promoting one's health, or as the Chinese says, 'yang sheng', literally, to nourish one's mind-body. It is frequently claimed that one cannot sustain injuries with taijiquan because it is practised so slowly. It is a myth. If your postures are out of alignment, minor injuries will accumulate over time and evolve into major ones. It is with that in mind that the course is spread over 30 weeks to ensure safety and a deeper understanding of the art form. The focus of the course is practical.

The benefits of practising taijiquan correctly are many. The physical aspects are strengthening of the body, of sinews and muscles, improve respiration, re-alignment and correction of postures with all its attending effects. On the spirit-mind side, it widens and deepens your awareness of your self and body, of space and your movement through and in space, of patience. it is accurately described as poetry in action and meditation in motion.
